Solution To Global Warming Developed In Northwestern United States
The results of a 33-year study of sustainable farming methods at Earth Cycle, nonprofit research farm in Edwall, Washington indicate that the most effective way to combat of even to stop global warming is not to change energy policies so much as to change agriculture policies and practices. Changing land use practices from the current and historical emphasis on industrial style production and processing to sustainable smaller scale diversified sustainable family farms organized into local storage, processing and marketing co-operatives would result in very significant reduction in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions as well as great increases in carbon sequestration and oxygen production.
Secondary effects of implementing such policies and practices globally would include eliminating RURAL POVERTY AND UNEMPLOYMENT, URBAN MIGRATION, HUNGER and FOOD SHORTAGES, MOST CHRONIC DISEASE AND MALNUTRITION, WATER SHORTAGES and WILDLIFE EXTINCTIONS.
The obvious way to implement these changes would be to reform the Department of Agriculture which has been controlled largely by ADM, Cargill and other food giants which also dominate media and national politics. For example:
If the Palouse- scabland area of eastern Washington, North Idaho, and NE Oregon were converted into the EarthCycle.org method which could easily happen if the USDA simply stopped subsiding industrial grain and soybean production, including taxing landowner and producers for CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. Then by buying futures from farm families and co-operatives that come up with a sustainable production plan, to be repaid by turning over at least 10% of such products when they go to the market, providing a sustainable supply for government food programs, food banks, etc.
I simply estimate the Palouse area to be 200 miles square and each current farm to average 4 square miles (2480 acres) that is 10,000 farms. Which are now producing copious greenhouse gasses and other air and water pollution, using significant quantities of fossil fuels for pesticides, fertilizers, and tractor and truck fuel. And Much of the energy for processing and distribution and even reducing soil carbon bank from cultivation and erosion. All this to produce huge quantities of low protein wheat and high-fat beef in feed lots all of which have negative food value bringing larders in causing obesity, heart disease and other chronic diseases such as arthritis, alzhiemers and depression.
Using the Earth Cycle plan as demonstrated in out 30-year project this same farmland would translate into 1,240,000 eco-sustainable homesteads organized into 10,000 co-ops providing all essential social and economic services. For example: product storage, processing, marketing, daycare, education, senior care, housing, all within a mile of the homestead. This would easily provide food, fuel and fibre for an equal number of urban families using zero fossil fuels and producing O2 and H2O as the main byproducts --- thus ending global warming.
